walkout!
the sinverguenzas uc regents + sinverguenza arnold schwarzenegger are trying to push through a 32% tuition & fee increase in the university of california for next year. undergraduate tuition & fees would hit more than $10,000 (obscene!), with fewer & more crowded classes and of course cut hours for libraries, etc. the cal state schools have been seeing similar mierda. the regents are pretty hell bent on taking the last bit of "public" out of public higher education in california, gutting even further an already significantly privatized state university system (which used to be entirely subsidized!).
but ok! there's a massive walkout scheduled for today. students as well as professors & lecturers will walk out at all 10 uc schools throughout california. union workers from cue & upte will strike, and will set up picket lines at the entrances starting at 7:15am.
sure, (academia in general and) the uc schools in particular are institutions in the service of captialism & imperialism, actively cultivating the next generation of corporate technocrats and thugs, and housing some main components of the imperial war machine.
they're also where lots of us first came across gramsci or fanon or lenin. where we busted through our first police lines, took our first arrests, learned what proper political agitation is and how to defend ourselves against batons & pepper spray. and have been sites of proud & militant movements for students' rights & educational equity throughout the decades. and though it's currently quite far from where we would want it to be, the battle for public education is essential and the fight it deserves is a valiant one.

and from anti-war & free speech activist mario savio at uc berkeley in 1964...

awww. i was walking down broadway in oakland tonight, late to where i was going and not really looking up when i heard this voice yell, "chula vista! in the house!". which of course made me smile even before i saw who it was. i looked up and saw my old friend and comrade...
ah, so good to see him! one of the most beloved deejays in the bay for sure, sake 1 & his mixes are legendary. soul deluxxe 1, 2, & 3 would be like classic soul + audio from angela davis + early dancehall. excellent. and it would be playing at the club. then there was that fania one. hector lavoe + ismael rivera + más hector lavoe = super-chevere.
you can find dj sake 1 spinning weekly at pacific standard time and keep up with those quality remixes at his site...

el son sin fin
oh my god, how much do i love el son jarocho? sooooo much! me encaaaanta. (actually i think all las rsf do.) the traditional music of the beautiful state of veracruz (méxico), el son jarocho is derived from indigenous, african, and spanish rhythms. its call & response décimas and evocations of collective memory are perfect music for political protest. indeed there are countless songs in this style against the bosses and for the revolution. more about that soon...

jaja. you know, (obviously) the u.s. is so racist. but government agencies often at least try to hide it with a bit of veneer. sometimes, though, they just come out and say what they really mean. like: if you are hanging out in the forest speaking spanish & listening to mexican music you must be a dangerous criminal!
the u.s. forest service was recently forced to retract an official warning to beware of campers in national forests who eat tortillas, drink Tecate beer and play Spanish music because they could be armed marijuana growers...

Michael Skinner, a law enforcement officer with the U.S. Forest Service in Colorado, said warning signs of possible drug trafficking include "tortilla packaging, beer cans, Spam, Tuna, Tecate beer cans," and campers who play Spanish music. He said the warning includes people speaking Spanish.
The warning signs were included in a slide presentation put together for drug agents in Colorado and the public.
Skinner said this may or may not represent criminal activity, but are indicators and he urged any campers who encounter long-term campers meeting the profile to "hike out quickly" and call police.
