..."Art. 3: No one has to obey neither a usurper government nor those who assume functions or public employment through the force of arms or using measures or procedures that break or fail to recognise that which the Constitution and the laws establish. The acts verified by such authorities are invalid. The people have the right to resort to insurrection in defense of constitutional order."

yesterday the people of honduras awoke to find their democratically-elected president zelaya has been kidnapped at gunpoint by u.s.-trained military thugs, and a fake president direct from the honduran ruling class installed. inside honduras & in the exterior, hondureños are out in the streets condemning the coup and demanding the return of the exiled zelaya. in the capital they are defying the curfew, setting up barricades, and confronting the military with rocks & sticks. last night cnn even showed women throwing punches at soldiers as they ran past in formation. find the consulate nearest you and show some solidarity!!!! following is the info for a protest in sf called by the fmln (northern california) and others, as well as some communications in re: the golpe de estado...

¡¡¡¡¡solidaridad con el pueblo hondureño!!!!!

protest today:

4-7pm
monday, june 29th
consulate of honduras in sf
@ the flood building: 870 market street (@ powell)

this is a communication sent out last night by cindy from ggj
:

Dear GGJ members,

This morning, June 28 the democratically elected left leaning President of Honduras, Manuel Zelaya was kidnapped and ousted out of the country by the military. Roberto Micheletti, president of the congress was sworn in as President of Honduras. Micheletti is right wing and ruling class and immediately instituted a military state with a curfew from 9 pm to 5 am. Many of the social movement leaders are being targeted and orders for their arrest have been put out... these are some of the folks we met at the Americas Social Forum in Guatemala... the leader of the Via Campesina, Berta Cazares from the Feminist movement, indigenous leader from the COPINH, union leaders, etc. Also Salvadoran observers have been arrested. Right now there are thousands of people protesting at the presidential palace under a severe thunderstorm, defying the curfew to not allow Micheletti in. There are military checkpoints in all of Tegucigalpa and folks fear bloodshed. The people of Honduras are asking for immediate solidarity, by having actions at the Honduran Consulates internationally, and for us in the US to call President Obama and Sec. of State Clinton to demand the reinstatement of President Manuel Zelaya and demand the constitutionally legal Referendum, and to stop the military terror of the people and social movements in Honduras.

this is the text of the llamamiento urgente de los movimientos sociales del ALBA / urgent call of the social movements of the ALBA:

Five weeks ago, on May 22 my daughter was born. I used to sing “Viento” by Jaguares to my nephew, Jacob, when he was an infant. Being one his primary caregivers, I found the lyrics sweet and appropriate for the purity of baby-love. Now I find myself singing the same song to my daughter and not being able to even get through it (ah, those postpartum hormones). And I’m thinking, was Saúl Hernández ever a nursing mother? Because a more perfect expression of motherly love/obsession I have yet to encounter. I’d like my daughter to remember this song as her earliest lullaby, that is, if I can ever stay dry-eyed enough to sing her the entire thing in key.

Nayáhuari Meza-Martinez

"Viento" - Jaguares

Préstame tu peine, y péiname el alma /lend me your comb and comb out my soul
Desenrédame, fuera de este mundo /unwind me far away from this world
Dime que no estoy soñándote /tell me that I’m not dreaming you
Enséñame, de que estamos hechos /teach me what we are made of
I want to jump between planets until I see an empty one
Que quiero irme a vivir, pero que sea contigo /I want to go live there, but only if it’s with you

Viento, amárranos /Wind, tie us together
Tiempo, detente muchos años /Time, hold still for many years

Préstame tu peine, y péiname el alma /lend me your comb and comb out my soul
Purifícame, no me abandones /purify me, don’t abandon me
Préstame tu sueño, y duérmeme /lend me your dream and help me sleep
Embrújame, volvámonos eternos /bewitch me, let’s become eternal
I want to jump between planets until I see an empty one
Que quiero irme a vivir, pero que sea contigo /I want to go live there, but only if it’s with you

Viento, amárranos /Wind, tie us together
Tiempo, detente muchos años /Time, hold still for many years

Michael Jackson Presente!

********************

One memory from when I was a little kid was sitting in the living room of our apartment and watching on our small TV the video for "Thriller" by Michael Jackson. I was about 4 years old, and although I was a bit scared by the zombies, I could not tear myself away from the video or from the song. Mi mom told me that if I watched the video the Cucuy would come out, which would regularly discourage a 4 year old girl, but could not stop me from watching and listening to it.

Outside of what MJ did in his personal life, his musical talent cannot be denied. So today, on the day of his death, lets celebrate his musical talent and his musical legacy that has impacted millions of people.

MJ, your music will live on forever....

I leave you all with the video of more than 1500 inmates at the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center in Cebu, Philippines dancing to "Thriller". It's super cool!

radio venceremos & the butterfly

i found this email in my inbox that mp sent to claudia & me, about radio venceremos and the fmlnista they call la mariposa (butterfly). lovely!!! i am pasting it all below...

fellow enthusiasts of the fmln,

i have spent the last weeks immersed in a book of memoirs about radio venceremos. the stories are incredible. literally i am reading with my mouth open. and i just have to share my excitement and i thought you two would appreciate.

so one of the amazing stories is of marina manzanares, a student militant and famous agitator who became the only woman co-host of radio venceremos, known by her code name/nickname "mariposa". unlike most of the radio venceremos crew, she survived the civil war, and remained a militant in the fmln.

in 2006, during the wave of repression and murders, the paramilitary tortured and killed both her parents, in their 70s. fucking mind boggling.

she remained a militant and an agitator. and this year, she got to see the fmln come into power. here's footage of her getting a song dedicated to her and agitating the shit out of the crowd. you'll notice the chant "los masacrados seran vengados!" and her statement about her parents torture & assasination: "NO me siento sola. estan todos ustedes CONMIGO!" and everyone goes crazy. amazing.

!!!

Are Trustifarians Endangered? We can only hope....

According to this article in the NY Times, "Trustifarians" are being hit by hard times brought on by their families' gambling on the stock market and on bad mortgage securities. "Trustifarians" are also known as "Trust Fund Hipsters", "Hij@s de Papi", "Subsidized Loafers", and other affectionate names.

Oh no! What will that artists-that-has-never-sold-any-art-but-lives-in-a-flat-in-the-mission-previously-rented-by-working-class-tenants do? Or what about the loafer hipsters who like to sit at Ritual Coffee on their computer all day, even though they have internet at home? I mean, who will wait an hour for mediocre food at Boogaloos? Will these Trustafarians be able to get a job and make it through four hours without "twittering" or taking artistic yet aloof pictures for their facebook/myspace profiles?

As a show of solidarity we can give them a gift bag of job applications, coupons, and fashion tips, such as don't wear your faded/yellow "Keep on Truckin'" t-shirt to a job interview and leave the ironic 80's fashion at home.

At this very moment capitalism continues to collapse onto itself, people continue to loose their jobs & homes, and the pinche mayor (gruesome newsom) is hells bent on gutting services for the poor and for the ill. The people of San Francisco are fighting to keep these services which people depend on every day. The least of our concerns is whether or not the offspring of the ruling class will have to move back with their parents or if they will have to confront the reality of 40+ hour weekday.

Welcome to our economic reality, Trustifarians. It's going to be a bumpy ride.

free the sf8!!

today was the beginning of the (re)trial of the sf8.

in 1973 eight black community activists, now known as the sf8, were arrested & charged with the 1971 killing of a white san francisco police officer. in 1975 those charges were thrown out after it was revealed that police in new orleans, who conducted interrogations for the case, used torture to extract confessions from the detainees. interrogations lasted several days and new orleans police employed electric shock, cattle prods, beatings, sensory deprivation, plastic bags and hot, wet blankets for asphyxiation.

the defendants, now in their 60s, 70s, and 80s are right now fighting the charges again. the sf labor council (above the noisy objections of the police officers' union) has passed a resolution in support of the men, desmond tutu & the world council of churches have issued an international call for charges to be dropped, and tomorrow the sf board of supervisors will consider eric mar's resolution for the same.

see more about the sf8 and their case in freedom archives' legacy of torture (audio-only version via the national radio project). print propaganda to distribute & sign the open letter in support of the defendants! show up at the steps of the sf court house (850 bryant) on july 6th at 9am, the next court date, for the rescheduled preliminary hearing!!

todo el poder al pueblo!! all power to the people!!

solidaridad

oooh, ziad made my heart melt yesterday when, in conversation, he mentioned being taught about nicaragua & the sandinistas during his political training in palestine at the age of 14. back in nicaragua, the young sandinistas in political education class were at the very same moment, i'm sure, also studying palestine :)

in honor of nicaragua sandinista and the palestinian resistance...
hasta la victoria!!

tax the rich!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i am so sick of the arnold schwarzeneggers of the world (jeje, well gracias a dios there is only actually one in the world but you know what i mean) talking about it's difficult but we are called upon to make some tough decisions because sorry we are out of money and oh, sorry that means we have decided to cut the following (already very restricted & underfunded) entirely from the state budget: free healthcare for children, aid to poor families, subsidized care for viejitos. oh and also we will be drastically cutting funds from public education & state parks.

you pinches ladrones, hijos de ___ ! soooooooooo tired of your mierda. why don't you take a pay cut or force your families to go without healthcare??!! pinches ruling class sinverguenzas de mierda. scandalous.

(dibujito : mafalda)

so, we were talking about the need for the u.s. left to get its act together and articulate a clear policy demand right now, and to start trying to popularize the hell out of it. yes, we know ultimately we are fighting for the burial of this vile capitalist system. but in the meantime we need to exact some concessions from the bosses. especially right now, this is a mess entirely created by them and they should pay. progressive taxation doesn't have quite the ring to it. so we think we should just say what we mean. eric thought of a slogan:

tax the rich!!
you break it ... you buy it!

i like it! ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡que pague el patrón!!!!!!!

ska-p sings victor jara

so, speaking of favorite cover-songs and of victor jara...

here is ska-p's version of jara's juan sin tierra (landless juan). theirs contains the original lyrics, which comprise a mexican revolution corrido, and also a few lines in honor of jara himself:

no olvidamos el valor de victor jara

dando la cara siempre a la represión
le cortaron sus dedos y su lengua
y hasta la muerte gritó revolución

we don't forget the courage of victor jara

always standing up to repression

they cut his fingers and his tongue
and til death he shouted revolution

juan sin tierra : ska-p (original, victor jara)

and speaking of the land for those who work it (!!)... i was recently developing curriculum on the mst, the brazilian landless workers movement, and came across this history of slogans from 1979 to 2012. ¡que viva el mst!

1979-1983:
Terra Para Quem Nela Trabalha!
Land for Those Who Work on It!

1984-1988:
Without Land Reform, there will be no democracy & land occupation is the only solution!

1988-1995:
Ocupar, Produzir, Resistir!
Occupy, Produce and Resist!

1995-2000:
Reforma agraria: Uma luta de todos!
Agrarian Reform: A fight for all!

2000-2007:
Reforma Agraria: Por um Brasil Sem Latifundios!
Agrarian Reform: for a Brazil without Large Plantations!

2007-2012:
Reforma Agraria: Por Justica Social e Soberania Popular!
Agrarian Reform: For Social Justice & Popular Sovereignty!
