¡Ricky Martin en Solidaridad con la Comunidad Árabe! Bueno…casi….
I promise I will become a spokesperson, if you allow me to, a spokesperson on your behalf. I will defend you and try to get rid of any stereotypes".
Those comments are made out of ignorance and we have to sometimes ignore the ignorant, but we also have to educate the ignorant. You have me here as a friend".

against white picket fences
and hurray for the queers holding down the radical politics! the ones who recall the pre-stonewall riot at compton's cafeteria in the tl, which saw working-class drag queens unleash years of pent up fury on homophobic cops. the ones fighting every day for decent & affordable housing, for immigrant & workers' rights, for universal healthcare. the ones who shut down the ny stock exchange to protest a pharmaceutical industry shamelessly profiteering from human suffering. the ones who continue to call out sf mayor gavin newsom as the defender of the ruling class that he is, who aren't blinded by his blatant political opportunism in the form of bestowing "marriage rights".
as tommi says in the introduction to his excellent anthology on the early years of the queer rights movement:
As long as queer people are homeless, hungry and without jobs or medical coverage, as long as LGBT workers don't receive a living wage, as long as the wealth of this country is in the hands of a few, as long as the means of production are owned by that very same monied class, we queers will never truly have achieved what gay liberation set out to do four decades ago.

thanks to jonathan for sending along this performance by jamaica-born stacyann chin. it's brilliant! the best & most well-spoken articulation i've seen in a long time of what's gone wrong with a movement that started with a riot (take your pick, stonewall or compton's) & is currently racing towards the white picket prison...

this is from one of my favorite posts:
Cholo Word Of The Day - Chota
La Chota is very similar to La Jura a previous word of the day. It seems we have a good number of word to describe the fuzz.
Word: Chota
Meaning According To DT: police, jura, fuzz, 5-O
Used in a sentence: "Meli, si vez a la chota, run porque sino te meten a el bote." "Porque chingados me van a encerrar, si I haven't did nothing."
Translation according to DT: "Melinda, if you see the nation's finest, run because they will incarcerate you!" "Why would those civil servants put me in jail, I haven't done anything?"

pachucas & police (east l.a.: 1940s)
and in honor of the pachuc@s, who left us a great & rebellious legacy (and a lot of excellent slang), a little maldita vecindad...
pachuco : maldita vecindad
The pachucos are youths, for the most part of Mexican origin, who form gangs in southern cities; they can be identified by their language and behaviour as well as by the clothing they affect. They are instinctive rebels, and North American racism has vented its wrath on them more than once .... Their attitude reveals an obstinate, almost fanatical will-to-be, but this will affirms nothing specific except their determination . . . not to be like those around them.

Nelson Mandela, ex president of South Africa and lifetime fighter against apartheid today is 91 years of age!
Continue fighting, continue singing, and that you have many more years of energy to fight against injustice.
"Let there be work, bread, water and salt for all"/ Que haiga trabajo, pan, agua y sal para todos
"For to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others"/ Para ser libre no solo es suficiente abandonar las cadenas de uno, pero de vivir en una manera que respeta y realza la libertad de otros
"I have walked that long road to freedom. I have tried not to falter; I have made missteps along the way. But I have discovered the secret that after climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb. I have taken a moment here to rest, to steal a view of the glorious vista that surrounds me, to look back on the distance I have come. But I can only rest for a moment, for with freedom comes responsibilities, and I dare not linger, for my long walk is not ended"
Yo he caminado esa carretera larga a la libertad.

Leon, qué te pasa hermano!!! cómo podés ir a cantar a Israel!!!

frederick douglass day
i did get an email from ayoka wishing me a happy frederick douglass day, though;) a-ha! now that's more like it!!
from frederick douglass' (in)famous address of july 4th, 1852:
...What, to the American slave, is your 4th of July? I answer; a day that reveals to him, more than all other days in the year, the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the constant victim. To him, your celebration is a sham; your boasted liberty, an unholy license; your national greatness, swelling vanity; your sound of rejoicing are empty and heartless; your denunciation of tyrants brass fronted impudence; your shout of liberty and equality, hollow mockery; your prayers and hymns, your sermons and thanks-givings, with all your religious parade and solemnity, are to him, mere bombast, fraud, deception, impiety, and hypocrisy -- a thin veil to cover up crimes which would disgrace a nation of savages. There is not a nation on the earth guilty of practices more shocking and bloody than are the people of the United States, at this very hour.
¿verdad que sí? ¡eso!
speaking of ayoka, we were sitting in her car on san jose ave in the mission the other day, eating mitchell's ice cream (macapuno, chocolate-dipped x2 of course), and she played for me on the car stereo a song performed by bettye lavette. oh, it's just gorgeous (sigh)... and has been in my mind ever since.
i'm walking through the desert
and i am not frightened although it's hot
i have all that i requested
and i do not want what i haven't got
i do not want what i have not got : bettye lavette (original, sinead oconnor)
thank you, ayoka, ms. lavette, & frederick douglass!
happy frederick douglass day to everyonel!!
