the earthquake devastation in haiti is a natural disaster built upon many man-made disasters of the western imperialist kind. haiti is a republic born from a slave rebellion. the first country in latin america to win independence from europe! for centuries haitians have heroically resisted colonialism, neo-colonialism, dictatorships and more dictatorships; despite intense poverty and the most violent repression, haitian activists have been relentless in their fight for real democracy. they are truly among the bravest i have ever known.
