pinches racistas de mierda

jaja. you know, (obviously) the u.s. is so racist. but government agencies often at least try to hide it with a bit of veneer. sometimes, though, they just come out and say what they really mean. like: if you are hanging out in the forest speaking spanish & listening to mexican music you must be a dangerous criminal!

the u.s. forest service was recently forced to retract an official warning to beware of campers in national forests who eat tortillas, drink Tecate beer and play Spanish music because they could be armed marijuana growers...

from ap:

Michael Skinner, a law enforcement officer with the U.S. Forest Service in Colorado, said warning signs of possible drug trafficking include "tortilla packaging, beer cans, Spam, Tuna, Tecate beer cans," and campers who play Spanish music. He said the warning includes people speaking Spanish.

The warning signs were included in a slide presentation put together for drug agents in Colorado and the public.

Skinner said this may or may not represent criminal activity, but are indicators and he urged any campers who encounter long-term campers meeting the profile to "hike out quickly" and call police.

...

Marvink Correa, spokesman for the Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition, said federal officials are painting an unfair stereotype of Hispanics.

"When I go camping, I'll be sure to play nothing but Bruce Springsteen," he said.

**

but really, they could save themselves the trouble of looking for tortilla packages in the forest, if they would just legalize. i mean, come on ¡¡por dios!!

please play the following loudly next time you are in a national forest:

we will be burning : sean paul

legalización : ska-p

la guardia : la gossa sorda

mis tres animales : tucanes de tijuana

Pinches Capitalistas...US Edition

As the media basks on the meaningless rising numbers on Wall Street and in declaring victory for capitalism, it is still all too clear that the poor continue to get poorer, and the rich continue to accumulate ill gotten funds to pay for offensively extravagant lives.

Pinche California Governor Schwarzenegger has ordered cuts of over $85 billion from services, including health insurance for children, assistance for people with AIDS, and families with foster children. State workers will be forced to furlough 3 working days of each month, a 14% cut in wages. At the same time, Andres Piedrahita, who helped loose over $6.7 billion through Bernard Madoff's $50 Billion global ponzi scheme, just bought a $30 Million boat to cruise in. The malvados are oblivious to the charities they have pilfered or the pensions they have pillaged. He and Schwarzenegger do not lose any comforts or sleep while millions loose pensions, homes, health care, and their very lives.

Abajos with these pinche criminales who get away and prosper from these atrocious crimes where they ruin thousands of people’s lives, yet do not have to face any repercussions!!

Pinches Capitalista!

ska-p sings victor jara

so, speaking of favorite cover-songs and of victor jara...

here is ska-p's version of jara's juan sin tierra (landless juan). theirs contains the original lyrics, which comprise a mexican revolution corrido, and also a few lines in honor of jara himself:

no olvidamos el valor de victor jara

dando la cara siempre a la represión
le cortaron sus dedos y su lengua
y hasta la muerte gritó revolución

we don't forget the courage of victor jara

always standing up to repression

they cut his fingers and his tongue
and til death he shouted revolution

juan sin tierra : ska-p (original, victor jara)

and speaking of the land for those who work it (!!)... i was recently developing curriculum on the mst, the brazilian landless workers movement, and came across this history of slogans from 1979 to 2012. ¡que viva el mst!

1979-1983:
Terra Para Quem Nela Trabalha!
Land for Those Who Work on It!

1984-1988:
Without Land Reform, there will be no democracy & land occupation is the only solution!

1988-1995:
Ocupar, Produzir, Resistir!
Occupy, Produce and Resist!

1995-2000:
Reforma agraria: Uma luta de todos!
Agrarian Reform: A fight for all!

2000-2007:
Reforma Agraria: Por um Brasil Sem Latifundios!
Agrarian Reform: for a Brazil without Large Plantations!

2007-2012:
Reforma Agraria: Por Justica Social e Soberania Popular!
Agrarian Reform: For Social Justice & Popular Sovereignty!

¡¡Puras Covers!! Only Covers!!

Something I have always liked is a band’s ability to take another artist’s song and sing it in their own unique style. I am not talking about those bands that sample parts of other songs without even giving credit to the original artist. I am talking about bands that out of their pure love of music cover songs that can transport us to another time or to another genre of music.

I would like to share with you all some of my favorite covers and others that I have found recently and I loved. Let me know what you think!

Well, better late than never!
Sorry for not posting this yesterday, but I have a super fierce flu. I want to dedicate “Violencia Machista” by Ska-P to all the women that are abused physically, mentally, economically, and sexually by their partners, families, communities, or some government. As the song says, ARM YOURSELF!

Violencia machista, violencia machista
Violencia machista, violencia machista

Violencia machista, violencia machista
Violencia machista, violencia machista

Violencia machista, violencia machista
Violencia machista, violencia machista

the workers

hurray!!! the sf chinese progressive association celebrates a great victory today. after a 3-month heroic fight against their former boss for back wages & past-due overtime pay, the workers at new on sang poultry shop in chinatown finally won their demands. regularly joined on the picket lines by other low-wage & immigrant workers and their families, their win is a victory for just compensation but also for worker solidarity. ¡¡felicidades, compañeros!! the celebration is today at cpa @ 1pm. all are welcome.

from shaw san:

new on sang worker leader lin gan sums it up: "long live worker unity!"... this fight isn't just about unpaid wages; it's about standing up against exploitation of immigrant workers in chinatown and elsewhere. we hope you will continue to support all workers who are struggling against wage theft, and for full respect and dignity as workers.

**

this is my place, these are my people
we are the workers, the most important class
it's why, my proletarian brother, with pride
i sing you this song, we are the revolution.

yes sir, the revolution!
yes sir, yes sir! we are the revolution,
your enemy is the boss,
yes sir, yes sir! we are the revolution,
long live the revolution!

i've recently been working on some curriculum about la crisis económica, and thinking a lot about the working class, increasing productivity & declining real wages, globalization & de-industrialization. and about: how and when will the workers finally seize the means of production?!... hmm, sometimes the picture looks pretty bleak. but thank goodness for the worker leaders of new on sang, republic windows & doors, fasinpat (ex-zanón) & chilvert! they remind us all of what's possible...

¡todo el poder al pueblo! ¡que vivan los trabajadores!

the police

...the “power” which is called the state ... arose from society but places itself above it and alienates itself more and more from it. what does this power mainly consist of? it consists of special bodies of armed men having prisons, etc., at their command.

: the state and revolution (lenin)

how you gonna come?

or on the trigger of your gun...

the overseer rode around the plantation
the officer is off patroling all the nation...

the oakland police department wants to push a youth curfew law through the public safety committee of the oakland city council tomorrow. the curfew would apply to all young people under 18 years of age on the public streets between the hours of 10pm and 5am sunday through thursday, and 11pm to 5am fridays & saturdays. young people who violate the curfew would be questioned and detained. what?! really it's the police who should be put under curfew. they're the ones that go around shooting unarmed people in the back in the middle of the night.

show up for public comment!
